This paper explores the linkages between violence and elections in Africa. In doing so, it clears up two popular misconceptions. First, it reminds us that although political violence may culminate around election dates, the elections themselves are not responsible for it – persistent power struggles are. Second, the paper argues that elections are poor peacebuilding instruments and shouldn't be seen as such. We should ask no more of them than that they be free and fair.
