This article addresses the relationship between Germans and Israeli Jews in light of the 50th anniversary of the German-Israeli diplomatic relations in 2015. The authors examine the results of a broad survey in both countries which asked Germans and Israeli (Jews) about 1) the state and national identity; 2) history and the Holocaust; 3) Israeli-German relations today; and 4) the special relationship that exists between the two countries. They then argue that the relationship is still affected by the past and that Germany still bears a special responsibility towards Israel.
