This paper takes a retrospective look at the causes and key events of the Euromaidan demonstrations in Ukraine one year on from their occurrence. In particular, the author 1) makes the point that the original causes of the demonstrations have been misrepresented; 2) examines why former President Yanukovych's regime deployed violent force against the protestors at some points and was restrained in its use of force at others; 3) explains how the Yanukovych regime came to the conclusion that it was not going to win; and 4) discusses the role of Russia and other international players in the events which occurred.
