This commentary discusses Algeria's role in helping to stabilize the Mediterranean region, the reforms of its armed forces, and the history sale of arms and other military equipment to the country by Western states and the Soviet Union. The author also looks at what Algeria can do to play a more active role in North Africa and the Middle East.
