This paper addresses the rise of China through an examination of historical relations in East Asia as well as the implications of China's growth in power for the international order and the US alliance system in East Asia. In particular, the author focuses on how the history of the Chinese-centered tribute system is affecting the country's rise in power. The author also examines 1) whether China's growing power will lead to a reestablishment of China's regional hegemony; and 2) Japanese and Korean responses to China's rising power.
