This analysis takes stock of the bilateral relationship between the US and Malaysia and the major security challenges the latter faces as ASEAN's 2015 Chair. In the first case, there are three sticking points both countries need to 'massage' in order to both sustain and enhance their relations. In the second case, Malaysia has to grapple with two major problems – the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea and the growing threats posed by the so-called Islamic State and other terrorist groups.
