This paper recommends ways that South Korea can use its middle power status to enhance stability in East Asia. For example, the country could 1) redefine its alliance with the US; 2) turn the threats posed by North Korea into an opportunity to strengthen regional multilateral security cooperation; 3) participate in US and Chinese 'mini-lateral mechanisms' and work to reconcile them with one another; 4) work more closely with other middle powers to create needed regional action plans; and 5) burnish its reputation as a reliable middle power by actively taking part in global security affairs.
