This paper examines the impact of globalization on social welfare provision to the rural sector in China. The author contends that the findings of the study support the claim that globalization leads to social welfare expansion. However, he also states that demands for government welfare protection due to the volatility brought about by globalization prevented such an expansion. Instead, he suggests that such volatility, brought about specifically by the global economic crisis, led Beijing to alter its development strategy from being export-orientated to being driven by domestic consumption, and that this gave China's leaders incentives to expand social provision in the rural sector.
