This paper discusses Spain’s naturalization process and argues that the system is subject to discriminatory practices. According to the authors this is because 1) the system of differentiation by origin creates preferences for some communities – Latin American, Spanish speakers, non-Muslims – while creating difficulties for others – North Africans, Pakistani nationals; and 2) there is a lack of procedural uniformity throughout Spain, which means that immigrants in different regions are faced with different naturalization practices. The authors conclude with recommendations on how to increase the fairness of the Spanish naturalization process.
