This brief discusses US-Japan 2015 defense cooperation guidelines (2015 Guidelines) and the American pivot to Asia. The author describes the contents of the guidelines, particularly how the US and Japan will address the rise of China and Japan's military posture. He holds that an atmosphere of coexistence of competition and cooperation rather than unilateral opposition or conflict between the major countries in East Asia is good for Korea as it allows the country use foreign policy to pursue its national interests, and to form an international consensus to solve the North Korea problem.
