This brief examines the current debate over whether the UK should scrap its Trident nuclear submarine force or not. Among other issues, the brief’s author examines 1) the dynamics of the debate, including its strategic and financial dimensions; 2) how relying on an American weapon system shades the UK’s foreign and defense policies; 3) how having a nuclear arsenal affects the decision-making of other countries; and 4) why the UK sustained its nuclear deterrent after the end of the Cold War.
