As the authors of this paper see it, people across the world are facing growing insecurity because of a crisis that has global ecological, economic, and political dimensions to it. They further contend that the UK and other Western states have primarily responded to this existential-level threat by trying to “project power” in a series of military interventions that has only made the larger crisis worse. After explaining how and why the latter approach has been a rank failure, the text’s authors argue that it’s time to find new answers to fundamental questions: what does security mean, who should benefit from it, how is it achieved, and whose responsibility is it?
