This brief explores the surprisingly consistent views of power and self-interest that Donald Trump has held during the past two decades. Trump’s American nationalism, for example, is defined by a deeply Darwinian view of the world as a place of cutthroat competition that relies on raw strength. Given this bias, Trump will obviously not view NATO or Europe in general in sentimental ways.
