This paper, commissioned by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), examines chemical industry inspections under the chemical weapons convention (CWC). Since on-site inspections (OSIs) are one of the principal means of verifying state party compliance with the CWC, the study identifies ways in which the chemical industry can be subject to OSIs. The research paper discusses inspections procedures and the contribution of OSI activities to final compliance assessment. The author further assesses types of OSIs under the CWC and explores outstanding implementation problems and issues of concern.
