This paper details recurring predictions of water wars that have been voiced in scientific discourse, in speeches of politicians and in the media. The author gives an overview of the debate about water wars versus water peace and explains why the conflicting vision of water scarcity, although refuted in the scientific discourse, still dominates the mindsets of politicians and the wider public.
