This publication examines public opinion in the UK, France, Germany and the US on the relationship between trade and poverty. The report explores why people are motivated to fight poverty and what they see as trade's role in poverty alleviation. It also considers public opinion on the overall impact of international trade on domestic and international economies. It uses the survey data to propose a future direction for trade policy that is focused specifically on citizens in both western and developing countries. The report concludes with a discussion of the link between semantics, nuance and survey responses, and outlines policy objectives for policymakers and other elites to consider if they want to win back public support for trade.
