This paper discusses the situation between Israel and the Palestinians following the 2006 success of the Hamas movement in the Palestinian legislative elections. The author describes the policies of Hamas, outlines its relationship towards Israel, and examines the prospects for a long-term ceasefire. The author warns that the price of not engaging with groups such as Hamas may be too great.
