This paper discusses the role of renewable energy technologies (RET) in industrialized countries’ strategies for reducing CO2 emissions, and their potential for mitigating climate change, as well as for achieving long-term energy security. The authors state that development cooperation in the field of energy policy should be based on a broad strategy which includes both improvements in fossil fuel technologies and promotion of RET. The paper finally suggests ways to integrate RET into a coherent strategy for development cooperation.
