This paper emphasizes the importance of regional cooperation and integration for the countries of southern Africa and sees them even as a condition for accelerated economic and social development. The author shows what has been reached so far by the Southern African Development Community and indicates which future steps should be considered in order to support a sustained industrialization process. The author concludes that regional integration in southern Africa will only be successful if other goals are achieved in tandem, including political and economic stabilization of the region, mobilization of savings and investment, and a gradual integration of the region into the world markets.
