This paper describes the assignment between the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and developing countries. The author describes the contents of TRIPS and presents the views of both developing and industrialized countries on the controversial subject. He further assesses the problem from an economic angle and lays a special focus on software protection. To conclude, the author presents proposals for a reform of the TRIPS Agreement.
