This briefing paper presents four areas of responsibility of the IMF and presents suggestions for a reform. First, the IMF should, according to the author, be developed into the world's main monetary form with the newly-industrializing and developing countries appropriately involved. Second, the IMF should be given the mandate of an "enlarged information policy," enabling it in specific cases to inform the public about critical developments in a country. Moreover, all facilities, apart from the existing credit facilities and a new crisis facility, should be abandoned. In addition, the IMF should expand its service functions.
