This paper provides an analysis of the living and working conditions of workers in the coffee sector, particularly in view of the crisis in coffee prices. The authors argue that no elaborated concepts have been presented on the possibilities of using trade-flanking measures or inclusion of social standards in international trade relations to improve the social situation of plantation workers. The paper concludes by offering options for future development policies regarding the issue.
