This study addresses the importance of renewable energy technologies for the rural electricity supply. The authors argue that thanks to technological progress, renewable energy is becoming an increasingly attractive solution; this is especially true for solar photovoltaic technology, which is used in so-called off-grid photovoltaic systems (PVS) to supply sparsely-populated areas with no access to the national grid. This investigation – which is based on a case study on Brazil – provides an orientation for development cooperation concerning best practices to promote sustainable electricity supply with off-grid PVS.
