This paper examines whether group size is inversely related to successful collective action. The authors combine a non-cooperative game theory approach with empirical work, studying efforts of 28 Himalayan villages to protect their forests. Their findings about group size and its relationship to the provision of collective goods suggest that decentralization of resource management, especially in developing countries, must be exercised with care.
