With the shadow of a hegemonic China growing in the background, this paper evaluates the current state of relations between the US and the Asia-Pacific region. As the text’s author sees it, Washington will have to both cooperate and compete with China for regional power and influence. Local actors, in turn, will 1) try to balance the US and China against each other; 2) pursue more informal, issue-based partnerships; and/or 3) review the United States’ role in a region that’s actively pursuing economic and trade integration.
