As the US contemplates the repeal of its economic and trade sanctions against Sudan, this report reviews the potential implications of this decision for US-Sudan engagement. The text particularly highlights the benefits a repeal could have for conflict prevention efforts and humanitarian access, and argues that a failure to lift the sanctions could undermine US leverage with Sudan. The report also identifies key issues for the US to focus on in its future engagement with Sudan, including 1) the conflicts in South Kordofan and Blue Nile states; 2) the African Union-UN Mission in Darfur; and 3) Sudan-South Sudan relations.
