This paper examines the role of intermediaries operating in the sphere of cross-border cargo transportation in St. Petersburg. It describes the phenomenon of informal mediation using empirical evidence, and examines the process of institutionalizing informal mediation in the Russian business environment. In conclusion, the paper reveals the reasons behind the emergence of this phenomenon and the differences between intermediaries operating in the Russian business environment and their counterparts in the West.
