This paper addresses the profound transformation of collective contracts in four Mexican privatized companies, focusing on industrial restructuring, privatization and collective bargaining. The four companies are Siderúrgica Lázaro Cárdenas-Las Truchas (SICARTSA), Altos Hornos de México (AHMSA), Teléfonos de México (TELMEX) and Cananea Mining Company (CANANEA). For each, the paper discusses labor relations practices, pay and productivity related policies, productivity improvement schemes and labor management cooperation. The author concludes that the link between labor relations, productivity and competitiveness is highly specific to the respective enterprise and does not allow for easy generalizations.
