This paper explores the link between economic growth and human development and presents related empirical findings from South America. It develops a conceptual framework relating growth and human development, offers some comparative international evidence with a Latin American focus and provides brief conclusions for policy. The authors find that human development must precede or accompany economic growth in order for virtuous patterns of development to result.
