This paper investigates the politics and symbolism of memorial sites in Cambodia that are dedicated to the victims of the Democratic Kampuchea or Pol Pot period of 1975-1979. It looks at the Choeung Ek Center for Genocide Studies, located in the outskirts of Phnom Penh as well as at the local level genocide memorials found throughout Cambodia. The author offers insights into the People's Republic of Kampuchea's (PRK) national reconstruction and the place-based politics of memory around Cambodia's traumatic past.
