This paper examines how and why climate change has become such a significant item on both domestic and international political agendas. The author states that climate change can no longer be considered solely an environmental issue as it has far-reaching consequences for global security and socioeconomic development. The risks of climate change require a rethink of ongoing approaches to security and the development of cooperative and sustainable ways of achieving that security, with an emphasis on preventative rather than reactive strategies.
