This paper discusses how Americans of the early republic considered exporting Christianity back in the Ottoman-ruled Holy Land as their divine duty. It explores the Christian Puritans' view of Islam as a non-legitimate religion, and their efforts to loosen Islam’s hold over the Holy Land. The author argues that Christians failed to engage Muslims as humans with highly developed cultures of belief, thus demonstrating their narrow perception of diversity.
