This paper explores the work of two Arab authors on New York City. It looks in particular at how they use New York as a lens through which they formulate an Arab identity, and at the way they use race and gender in their formulations. The author argues that neither work proposes new ways in which to think about identity and that they rely on problematic and essentialized notions of self and other in proposing their arguments.
