This paper discusses the contention between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the American Presbyterian Mission in Egypt during the 19th century. It analyzes the Coptic Reform of that time, which aimed to fight the "ignorance" and "passivity" of the clergy. The author states that the two entities were arguing in one discursive field, while aspiring to distinctly modern forms of power and deploying distinctly modern techniques of control to realize that aspiration.
