This volume highlights that China’s current military reforms are unprecedented in their ambition and in the scale and scope of organizational changes. To provide an insight into what this could mean, the text’s authors provide a comprehensive analysis of 1) the reforms’ various dimensions; 2) the drivers and strategic context underpinning the reform effort; 2) PLA efforts to build a force capable of conducting joint operations; 3) Chinese President Xi Jinping’s role in driving the reforms and use of them to strengthen Chinese Communist Party control over the military, and much more.
