This report focuses on the developments and trends in EU defense and security policy following the Brexit referendum of June 2016. The authors consider the role played by the UK in EU security and defense cooperation, as well as the plethora of new security and defense proposals launched by the other 27 member states since the UK voted to leave the Union. Some of the key takeaways from the piece include 1) the current process for strengthened EU defense and security cooperation focuses on developing joint capabilities; 2) there is still no clear end-goal for EU security and defense cooperation; 3) there are good reasons for the continued involvement of the UK in the Common Security and Defence Policy post-Brexit, even if it could be difficult to retain such engagement, and more.
