This article examines how low levels of trust in the Nigerian police force have limited public cooperation in combating internal security threats. Given that insurgents, criminal gangs, and extremists have concentrated heavily in marginalized and distrustful communities, the text’s author believes the government should strengthen existing police oversight mechanisms and implement a merit-based appointment and promotion system for law enforcement personnel. The author further explores how implementing such changes will serve as an essential component in rebuilding trust with local communities.
