This text features 10 essays that look at the nature of power and politics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), and the level of interventionism the region has experienced since the Arab Uprisings. The essays specifically focus on 1) America’s recent distancing from this part of the world; 2) its counterinsurgency strategy from 2007-2011 and subsequent fight against the so-called Islamic State; 3) France’s involvement in MENA and most importantly the Sahel; 4) the role of regional actors in Syria’s Civil War; 5) interventionism in the broader Middle East following the Arab Uprisings; 6) how domestic factors are driving change in the region; 7) how the short-term focus of Western arms exporters has had a negative impact in the MENA area; and 8) the role climate change has played in Syria's troubles.
