This publication contends that as the Association of Southeast Asian Nation’s (ASEAN) energy demand is increasing, the regional oil and gas resources in the offshore zones of its member states are becoming even more important for the energy supply security of both the individual member states as well as for ASEAN as a whole. This threatens to fuel already existing maritime competition and conflicts in the South China Sea. In light of these developments, the text’s author analyzes to what extent maritime policies are interlinked with the states’ energy security concepts and challenges. More specifically, the publication 1) provides an overview of the member states’ energy situations, 2) analyzes energy policies in Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam, 3) examines Indonesia’s Global Maritime Fulcrum, and more.
