At the 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw, the Alliance set the terms for an enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. In this paper, Christian Leuprecht writes that the eFP is not merely a deterrence mechanism that relies on NATO’s reputation to guard its northeastern flank against Russia. Instead, he outlines how the eFP is an innovative deployment model developed in response to the dynamic and complex threat environment confronting the Alliance. Leuprecht also explores the prospects of applying the eFP framework elsewhere.
