This paper reflects on the lessons learned following the 2003 invasion of Iraq for UK foreign and security policy. To this end, the author tackles three questions: the future role of UK armed forces – the need to balance soldiers and peacekeepers; how UK participation in future “wars of intervention” might be justified and legitimized; and the UK’s role in effective action needed to eliminate terrorism and its root causes.
