This paper looks at Qatar’s ongoing diplomatic crisis, which emerged following the imposition of an embargo against the country by neighboring Arab states in June 2017. While Qatar has primarily responded to the embargo by attempting to maintain an image of being a strong and autonomous state, the author cautions that this course of action may deepen existing cleavages and hinder negotiations aimed at solving the crisis. The text ultimately suggests that any true resolution of the conflict will require all parties to recognize their common economic and strategic interests, including the survival and reinforcement of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
