This publication examines the illegality of nuclear weapons through the lens of international humanitarian law. Three fundamental principles are discussed: the prohibition against causing unnecessary suffering; the principle of neutrality; and the prohibition against environmental damage. Ambiguities in international law are underscored and previous rulings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) highlighted. Legally binding security assurances and affirmation of ICJ rulings constitute some of the mentioned recommendations.
