This publication discusses the negative consequences of US nuclear policy following the abrogation of the 1994 Spratt-Furse provision in May 2003. It focuses on the upsurge in US government funding for nuclear weapons initiatives and the subsequent build-up of nuclear infrastructure by member-states of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Moreover, it examines the Bush administration's rationale. The authors recommend that Article VI of the NPT be reaffirmed and call for recommitment on a timetable for negotiations on nuclear disarmament.
