This paper examines why seasonal influenza outbreaks and pandemic disease have generated the UK Parliament's interest in sourcing adequate quantities of vaccines. The contributors state that a key policy issue concerns the extent to which the government should stimulate vaccine research and manufacturing capacity rather than being led by the commercial interests of the pharmaceutical sector. The paper provides an overview of the UK's current position on vaccines and how public health interests are being reconciled with those of industry.
