This paper examines why infections account for approximately 10 percent of all deaths in the UK. The author details how the efficacy of anti-infectives is threatened by the spread of drug resistance factors. The paper states that efforts are needed to tackle emerging diseases such as SARS and that there is a pressing need for new anti-infective drugs. The author reviews the UK's burden of infectious disease, current anti-infective research and policy options to stimulate further drug development.
