This paper summarizes both continental trends and divergent country directions in relation to Africa's future development. Drawing from 1999-2006 Afrobarometer public opinion surveys, the authors argue that even though Africans increasingly worry about unemployment and food insecurity, they are politically patient. Moreover, the surveys show that Africans they are not ready to reject democracy simply because it may fail at economic delivery.
