This paper argues that variations in the interplay between cultural assimilation and cultural diffusion have played a significant role in giving rise to differential patterns of economic development across the globe. The fundamental hypothesis of this research stems from the recognition that the evolution of the wealth of nations has been governed, in part, by the conflicting effects of cultural assimilation and cultural diffusion in different stages of development.
