As tensions between the US and North Korea continue to rise, this paper contends there are three key factors that could guide future developments on the Korean Peninsula. These are 1) the systematic and regimented nature of North Korea’s pursuit of its nuclear program; 2) the limited range of policy options the US has to respond to the threat posed by Pyongyang; and 3) why China has only a meager amount of leverage when it comes to restraining North Korea.
