This note outlines the challenges in implementing river basin management plans (RBMPs) in the UK to meet the aims of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD seeks to protect, improve and maintain the environmental condition of surface and ground water. The paper concludes that the UK will have to engage with the public when implementing RBMPs.
